State Journal-Register: Time for new representative in LaHood’s district
There are many problems with the American Health Care Act (AHCA) passed last week by House Republicans, but this letter focuses on pre-existing conditions. The AHCA as proposed would allow states to request waivers of pre-existing conditions protections. A state waiver would place people with pre-existing conditions into high-risk pools, likely making health care unaffordable for many, and therefore inaccessible, causing these individuals to lose coverage. This could possibly result in many avoidable deaths to Illinois citizens.
As reported by the SJ-R on April 22 in an online article, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood stated at his town hall: “What I will pledge to you, anything that undermines pre-existing conditions, in any health care we vote on, is something I’m not going to support. When I look at the ACA or Obamacare, there’s a couple things in there that work. Pre-existing conditions is an area that we need to protect and I’m supportive of that. I also think that being able to keep your kids on their parents’ insurance is a good thing till 25 or 26, so I commit to you that keeping those two provisions, in whatever we vote for, has to be part of this bill.”
LaHood lied, plain and simple. He chose party and tax cuts for the wealthy over the estimated more than 1 million Illinoisans who will lose health care coverage under the AHCA. It’s time for a District 18 representative who will listen to and support Illinois citizens.
